sense" begins right now. >>> we begin the broadcast with a shooting in newtown, connecticut. 90 minutes of new york city. >> all the new details. >> mandy, the shooting happened this morning just after 9:30. that's when police got a 911 call. connecticut state police officials say that on and off duty officers reported to the school. they immediately began a search and an evacuation of the school. the shooter was found on scene deceased inside the building. as you mentioned, 18 children and 8 adults among those killed. the shooter as well also dead. officials tell nbc news a second person is in custody, wanted for questioning with relation to this shooting. officials have not confirmed those numbers saying that they are still notifying next of kin. the white house was notified this morning of the shooting and said like so many parents everywhere today, their hearts go out and they feel enormous, enormous sympathy to what the parents here and this community are going through. >> absolutely. it's completely tragic. thank you very much for the update. we will continue to monitor the situat

that happened here today in newtown, concould. police briefed the media giving the latest information, and here's what we know so far. 26 total victims, 20 of them young children. civics them were adults in the shooting that happened around 9:30 this morning. investigators say that a gunman came to the sandy hook elementary school here in newtown. he entered. he went to a classroom that nbc news has learned was taught by his mother. she was a kindergarten teacher here. it's believed that the gunman killed his mother and the children in her classroom. police say they continue to investigate. they are processing the scene right now. they are also going to court to get search warrants to execute them in various locations, of course, trying to answer the big question whenever something like this happens why? why did this happen? investigators don't even venture a guess of how long they will be processing the scene, the school which was just a short ways from here. they say they are going through it meticulously to try and figure out exactly what happened minute by minute and t

update now on that shooting at the sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. nbc news is reporting as many as 27 people may be dead from that shooting which broke out this morning shortly after 9:30. that's when police were called. as many as 17 to 18 of the victims are children. 7 to 8 adults including the gunman who authorities described to nbc news as a 20-year-old connecticut man who was dressed in black and was carrying two handguns. connecticut state police are set to begin a briefing at this hour. danbury officials and hospital officials tell nbc news that at least three people have been transported to the hospital. again, to as many as 27 people killed. we will bring you more details as they become available. back to you. >> thank you very much, bertha. we'll keep checking back with you and monitoring the situation. obviously an incredibly tragic situation still unfolding in newtown, connecticut. we will keep you up to date as new information does become available, but right now we turn our attention to what we do here at cnbc. our focus is the markets. we will be

terrible tragedy in newtown, connecticut. our words can do little to ease your pain. but you know this. we are with you in this incredible difficult time. and recognize that you are who we are thinking about, even as we try to focus on our work today. so as for the markets, it was another weak day. dow dipped 36 points. s&p gave up .41%. nasdaq declined .70. a lot of that again because of apple. you know the drill as we head into the weekend. i'm not expecting to hear any progress on the fiscal cliff. but you know, i always watch the sunday morning talk shows now very closely and i'm looking for some politicians saying something encouraging. what does encouraging mean? it means a republican uttering the two words tax increase without the word no before it. and the democrats uttering two words, spending cuts, without the word no before them. neither seems to be able to pull off that syntax, though. at this point i think we've got to assume that the washington people, they can't get it together. we've got to gird ourselves for a cliff, make sure that we understand what the dive will look
